The Arts in Secondary Education unit (EMT531)

Introduction

This unit introduces you to The Arts learning area of the Australian Curriculum (Years 7-10), as well as relevant senior secondary curriculum frameworks (Years 11-12), with specific attention to your own specialist teaching area(s) of dance, drama, music, media arts or visual arts. You will design lesson plans and sequences that employ creative, inquiry-based methods to enable young people to learn as both artists and audiences, and investigate the unique dynamic between discipline and creativity in arts pedagogy. Furthermore, you will investigate and articulate opportunities to foster general capabilities and address cross-curriculum priorities through Arts teaching and learning. You will explore First Nations’ perspectives on how cultural sovereignty and ways of knowing are integrated in arts practices and expression, and build on your prior knowledge and skills to learn more about the nature of The Arts as a school subject. Overall, this unit will introduce you to key curriculum and pedagogical concepts of exploring and responding, developing practices and skills, creating and making, and presenting and performing to provide a strong foundation for application in your second year units.
