English Studies in Secondary Education unit (EMT532)

Introduction

In this unit, you will study the Australian Curriculum: English (Years 7–10) and the Tasmanian senior secondary English courses (Years 11–12), developing an understanding of how these documents shape the teaching of English. With a particular focus on contemporary approaches, you will explore how to develop your students as purposeful and proficient communicators who can read, view, listen, speak, write and create across a range of contexts, and who develop as imaginative, critical and informed thinkers through their engagement with a wide range of texts. You will build English pedagogical content knowledge through the study of evidence-based explicit instruction and teaching and learning design for language, literature, and literacy learning across a range of text types including narratives, poetry, film, dramatic performances, and multimodal texts. A structured five-day classroom observation placement connects this knowledge to the practice of teaching English in secondary schools.
