Introduction
This unit introduces you to key pedagogical approaches to teaching the secondary mathematics curriculum. You will focus on the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, with an emphasis on the content strands of number, algebra, measurement, space, statistics, and probability for Years 7 to 10, with some consideration of senior secondary mathematics courses as well. You will learn about critical mathematical concepts, how these are developed across the curriculum, student understanding of critical mathematical ideas, and key pedagogical approaches for teaching mathematics effectively. You will participate in practical activities that focus on mathematics and its teaching, develop effective pedagogical practices, build knowledge of how student understanding of mathematics develops, and analyse and plan lessons that will build students’ conceptual understanding and mathematical skills.
