Introduction

In this unit you are introduced to the theory, methods, and practices of teaching outdoor and environmental education in secondary school (Years 7–10) through the Australian Curriculum. This unit explores contemporary issues influencing outdoor and environmental education and examines diverse pedagogical approaches that address these challenges. The unit emphasises the cultivation of human–nature relationships, sustainability, socio-ecological justice, and health and wellbeing through outdoor and environmental education experiences. You will engage with key curriculum frameworks to prepare for designing and evaluating outdoor and environmental education programs. In addition, safety protocols and effective organisational strategies for conducting practical activities in outdoor settings are applied in a range of contexts.
