Outdoor Journeys Extended unit (ENV205)

Introduction

In this Unit, you take an active role in designing and leading extended journeys through remote natural environments in Tasmania. Emphasizing student agency, the unit invites learners to co-create expedition experiences that reflect their developing philosophies of outdoor and environmental education. At the same time, the dynamic qualities of place—its ecological rhythms, challenges, and cultural stories—are recognised as co-educators in shaping the extended journey. Through a blend of theory and immersive field experiences, students deepen their leadership capabilities, ecological understanding, and critical reflective practice.

• Develop advanced skills for outdoor journeys such as extended expedition design, ecological interpretation, socio-cultural understanding, health and well-being, and co-leadership with place.
• Research and present complex aspects of cultural and natural history, ecology and/or environmental management and present findings to a group
• Prepare for, participate in, and co-lead with place extended journeys in remote outdoor environments
• Communicate critical thinking through writing, speaking, teamwork and academic integrity
