A basic understanding of both camera controls and computing skills are assumed for this unit. Students are to provide their own camera. As a minimum standard this must have full manual control.

Introduction

Photography 1 will introduce you to the medium of black and white photography. Directed by staff and technicians, in the context of a studio/workshop/tutorial curriculum, you will be introduced to traditional techniques, new technologies and approaches to contemporary practice. Study of this unit will involve undertaking basic skills and techniques, and introduce you to experimenting, critiquing and conceptualising form and method. Thematic lectures will provide an overview of historical and contemporary photography, and support projects that advance technical proficiency and your capacity to transform concepts into photographic imagery. You will be encouraged to consider connections to other studio units.

Teaching

Teaching Pattern

Weekly workshop. Students will complete a range of activities including technical workshops, project development, and presentations of work-in-progress. Students will engage with online content outside class time to prepare for workshop activities.
