Creative Writing: Concept and Craft unit (HEN204)

Introduction

To produce successful fiction, a writer needs not only to have great ideas but also to have the skill to bring those ideas alive on the page. In this unit, students are encouraged to work on their capacity for imagination and originality, and on developing their proficiency in the craft of writing. The reading program for the unit requires students to engage with a range of genres, and a craft analysis assessment enables students to focus on the aspects of writing that are most relevant to their own creative practice. Workshops provide a space in which students give and receive constructive criticism. Both on campus and online students attend timetabled classes in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

• Follow the sequential steps involved in producing a short work of fiction that is carefully crafted, improved through accepting and reflecting on feedback, polished through proofreading and attention to detail, and submitted on time.
• Reflect critically on creative writing produced by your peers.
• Analyse the features of published writing, and show understanding of how your findings can be applied in your own writing practice.
• Demonstrate skill in writing in English, including paying attention to the details of editorial polish (spelling, punctuation, layout, spacing, etc.).
