Introduction
HMC219 is designed to further develop competence in intermediate spoken and written Chinese (simplified characters). The unit builds on students’ study in HMC101 and HMC102. It introduces new grammar and vocabulary as well as examples of real-world language use to develop their Chinese to an intermediate level.

Learning Outcomes
- Compose sentences and passages in both spoken and written Mandarin Chinese, using vocabulary and grammar structures appropriate to an intermediate level.
- Converse in Mandarin Chinese on a range of topics with correct pronunciation, tones and intonation.
- Comprehend spoken and written texts at an intermediate level and understand the socio-cultural aspects involved.
- Develop awareness of Chinese culture and apply cross-cultural knowledge in written and oral communication.
