Introduction

How have successive generations made and remade communities, nation, relationships, homes, values, identities and environments across Australia’s history? This unit explores Australian history from deep time to the present, introducing and analysing key events and developments, including peopling the continent, British invasion and colonisation, Indigenous survival and sovereignty, convicts and free settlers, making modern democratic and public institutions, shaping the nation through war and migration, creating and challenging political, economic and social structures, and Australia’s connections with the wider world. With sensitivity to previous historical interpretations and ways of framing historical analysis, this unit engages deeply with the rich trove of digitised materials available to Australian historians to further develop skills in primary source analysis.
