Medieval Europe AD 1000-1450 unit (HTA334)

Introduction

Pick up the story in 1000 when the Vikings have given a kick-start to Europe's economy and the warrior mentality of the early Middle Ages is giving way to the rising aristocrats. From this starting-point, the unit will examine the fundamental changes which took place in Europe between the eleventh and mid-fifteenth centuries, e.g. political developments towards state formation, increasing lay literacy, the rise of the nobility and the chivalric ethos, new institutional and grass-roots Christian movements, urban expansion, universities and the 'twelfth-century renaissance', agricultural and technological innovations, the Black Death, peasant revolt, and the Hundred Years War.

Teaching Pattern	On Campus: Weekly scheduled seminar/lecture (45 mins); weekly online recorded lecture (45 mins); and weekly tutorial (1.5 hours). Note: the seminar/lecture will also be recorded and available online.  Off Campus: Weekly online lectures or equivalent (1.5 hours); and weekly participation in online discussion board or 1.5 hour Zoom tutorial.
