Medical Radiation Science CXA201

Students are required to complete a First Aid Certificate, undertake a Criminal Record Check, provide evidence of vaccination history and submit a working with children check prior to commencing the placement component of this unit. In order to commence workplace learning outside of the University of Tasmania (including clinical placements and visits) students are required to demonstrate compliance with the Faculty of Health Science and School of Human Life Sciences policies relevant to workplace based learning. These include the Police Check Policy and Procedures, Infectious Disease Policy, Code of Conduct and Student Placement Agreement. Students who do not comply with these policies will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not be able to complete this unit. Students who have not complied or are unsure of the policies should seek guidance from the School.

This unit provides a structured introduction to the practical aspects of the clinical environments within a medical radiation science department and basic techniques in medical radiation science. The unit introduces general aspects of the clinical environment, patient care, safety including radiation safety, and the role of the medical radiation scientist within a health care team. Specific requirements and methods of medical imaging, nuclear medicine and radiation therapy are examined and students are introduced to the basic tehniques and procedures of the three disciplines and the clinical environment. The unit includes a structural practicum in an appropriate medical radiation science department.
