Professional Experience Placement (PEP)
Students will be allocated PEP within individual health care agencies. Students may be expected to relocate and are expected to travel to where PEP is available. To be eligible to undertake PEP all students must be ‘Verified’ as meeting College of Health and Medicine PEP Safety in practice Compliance as per the Course Entry Requirements.
Students who cannot or do not comply with these requirements will not be allocated PEP and therefore will not be able to complete this unit.

This is the final unit in an advanced clinical exercise Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program that expands your real-world experience as a Student Exercise Physiologist and readies you to enter the workforce. You will have further exposure to the assessment, prescription, and delivery of exercise to clinical clientele via a minimum 140 hours placement in the University of Tasmania Exercise Physiology Clinic, and/or in University-approved WIL partner agencies, where you will be guided in your clinical education by appropriately qualified University, and agency supervisors. This unit builds on skills learned in Clinical Exercise Practicum 2, and provides opportunities to advance your clinical decision making and communication skills through supervised WIL placements, and to develop a deeper understanding of professional practice requirements for an industry environment.
Unit objectives are:
(1) to advance proficiency in communication and behaviour-change counselling techniques with clinical clientele;
(2) to advance clinical reasoning skills, problem-solving and clinical decision-making skills with clinical clientele.
(3) to advance practical screening, assessment and exercise prescription skills with clinical clientele.
(4) To advance professional skills in collaborative practice, self-reflection, and self-direction.
PEP Attendance Expectations:
Students are expected to participate actively and positively in the clinical exercise learning environment. They must strive to maintain steady progress within the unit, comply with workload expectations, and submit required work on time.
Students are required to attend placement blocks as allocated. Students may be required to travel state wide for placement. University accommodation may be offered at no charge to the student, where a placement is significantly distant from student’s residence. Students will be placed as near to home location as much as practicable, but this cannot be guaranteed. Other university commitments have been scheduled to allow time to attend placement blocks. Students must make the necessary arrangements (eg. with paid work, sporting, home or other life commitments) to ensure they are free and able to attend allocated placements. Unexplained absence from a scheduled placement is a breach of professional and PEP conduct and severe breaches can have implications for passing the Unit as per the SHS PEP Code of Professional and Ethical Conduct

- Apply clinical reasoning and reflective practice in the education, assessment, prescription and safe delivery of exercise for clients with a broad range of pathologies that are relevant to the practicum site attended
- Critically reflect on the practice of being a Student Exercise Physiologist in developing and delivering clinical exercise services based on appropriate assessment
- Problem-solve complex and diverse clinical situations and modify treatment approach where required. Explain when and how to educate, reassess, modify and progress exercise treatments, or cease treatment and refer on, as clinically necessary.
- Communicate clearly, concisely and professionally in written, verbal, and non-verbal forms with peers, clients from diverse backgrounds, carers, referrers, and a wide range of health professionals while on placement;
- Practice in an ethical, collaborative, and reflective manner as a Student Exercise Physiologist in line with Professional Standards for Exercise Physiology.
