Speech Pathology Practice 1 CXA725
Professional Experience Placement (PEP)
Students will be allocated PEP within individual health care agencies. Students must be available 5 days a week (40 hours) during the allocated PEP, and must be prepared to undertake a range of shifts – morning, evening and nightshift, which may include weekends, as per roster provided by the healthcare agency. Students may be expected to relocate and are expected to travel to where PEP is available. To be eligible to undertake PEP, all students must be ‘Verified’ as meeting College of Health and Medicine PEP Safety in Practice Compliance as per the Course Entry Requirements.
Students who cannot or do not comply with these requirements will not be allocated PEP and therefore will not be able to complete this unit.
PEP dates MAY differ from University of Tasmania calendar semester dates.
Introduction
This professional experience placement unit brings together core fundamental speech pathology practice knowledge and skills and requires students to apply them to work in supervised practice with children and adults. The focus is on professional experiential learning, including application of core theoretical knowledge and threshold concepts related to person and family-centredness, biopsychosocial models of practice, clinical reasoning, self-reflection, critical thinking, cultural safety and awareness, and evidence-based practice to direct client care. A range of standardised and criterion referenced assessments will be introduced to assess both communication and swallowing development and change across the lifespan. Students will demonstrate transfer of speech pathology knowledge, skills and attributes to both workplace learning and simulated environments.

Learning Outcomes
- Use appropriate tools and procedures to assess, describe and evaluate communication and swallowing adhering to legal, professional, ethical standards, codes and guidelines in speech pathology.
- Apply foundation clinical skills, including observation, information gathering, interaction and reporting, across the lifespan.
- Observe and reflect on professional communication and behaviour and the role of other professionals in speech pathology practice contexts.
- Demonstrate self-awareness and use of critical reflection to evaluate own performance and learning and inform ongoing professional development and practice.
