Clinical Psychology Placement 1 PSY706
Professional Experience Placement (PEP)
Students will be allocated PEP within individual health care agencies. Students must be available 5 days a week (40 hours) during the allocated PEP, and must be prepared to undertake a range of shifts (majority of shifts are during standard work hours; evening shifts are rare but can occur, night shifts do not occur) and which may include weekends, as per roster provided by the healthcare agency. Students may be expected to relocate and are expected to travel to where PEP is available. To be eligible to undertake PEP, all students must be ‘Verified’ as meeting College of Health and Medicine PEP Safety in Practice Compliance as per the Course Entry Requirements.
Students who cannot or do not comply with these requirements will not be allocated PEP and therefore will not be able to complete this unit.
PEP dates MAY differ from University of Tasmania calendar semester dates.
Introduction
This placement unit is the first of three placement units which begin to orient students to the complexities of integrating and applying theoretical and content knowledge to practice as a clinical psychologist. Through use of the CYPRS (Clinical Psychology Placement Rating System), student progress towards both accreditation competencies and associated ILOs is assessed. The CYPRS has an inherent, inbuilt scaffolding of achievement from Stage 1 (skills commensurate with an entry level, provisionally registered psychologist working under high levels of supervision) through to Stage 4 (skills commensurate with an entry level, fully registered psychologist), with each level of achievement required at various stages of the placement experience.

Learning Outcomes
- Apply under supervision a scientist practitioner approach in working with clients, including creating case formulations, conducting risk assessments, making diagnoses and developing treatment plans with consideration of cultural differences and diversity at a Stage 2 Clinical Psychology Placement Rating System (CYPRS) competency.
- Apply under supervision evidence based therapeutic techniques for common mental health concerns and flexibly adapt and tailor these to specific client presentations and compose a range of intra and interdisciplinary correspondence with other practitioners to inform coordinated approaches to client care at a Stage 2 Clinical Psychology Placement Rating System (CYPRS) competency.
- Select, administer, score and interpret under supervision a range of psychometric tests and questionnaires to prepare professional reports and provide verbal feedback to families and relevant professionals at a Stage 2 Clinical Psychology Placement Rating System (CYPRS) competency.
- Appraise under supervision complex ethical challenges in psychological practice and apply relevant legislation and ethical and professional practice guidelines to make clinical decisions about ethical dilemmas as they arise with specific clients at a Stage 2 Clinical Psychology Placement Rating System (CYPRS) competency
- Appraise under supervision the application of psychological practice and integrate supervisory feedback, self-reflection and self-practice for continual improvement of clinical psychological competencies at a Stage 2 Clinical Psychology Placement Rating System (CYPRS) competency.
