Fisheries assessment is a critical component of monitoring and managing fishery harvests. This advanced unit provides students with a detailed understanding of the quantitative techniques employed in the assessment of fished stocks. The unit covers fishery dependent and fishery independent data and its use in fisheries modelling, mortality estimation, biomass and yield modelling, stock-recruitment relationships and predictive fisheries risk assessments.

- Develop a conceptual understanding of whole-stock and cohort-based modelling techniques used in fisheries stock assessments with an awareness of their data requirements, limitations and assumptions.
- Construct quantitative models for the assessment of fished stocks using Excel.
- 3. Recommend management strategies that enable the sustainable harvest of fished stocks based on life history biology and model outputs from applied stock assessments.
