Knowledge Management JNB735

Introduction

This unit explores the need for knowledge to be managed in an organisation, and the tools and strategies that can be used to effectively manage the knowledge assets of that organisation. The unit starts with the identification of knowledge assets in an organisation, followed by knowledge capture and codification in order for knowledge to be shared and integrated into the organisational level. The unit then explores topics on individual and organisational learning and how learning can be encouraged and facilitated. Obstacles to knowledge transfer are identified together with an examination of the role of organisational culture in facilitating knowledge sharing. The unit also explains the formation of knowledge management (KM) strategies and the need to have a KM team. Measurement of KM effectiveness and legal and ethical issues of KM are dealt with in the last two modules. The focus of the unit is on the maritime and logistics industry and the challenges and obstacles associated with knowledge management in such a globalised industry.
