Introduction to Higher Degree by Research unit (XGR501)

Introduction

Introduction to Higher Degree by Research will introduce doctoral and masters candidates to higher degrees by research (HDR) study at the University of Tasmania. Candidates will be introduced to a range of topics including what it means to be an HDR candidate; the governance framework that articulates the terms and conditions of a HDR program; research ethics; planning and managing a research project; how to work in a research team; moral rights and protecting and commercialising research; information retrieval, library services; and resources and occupational health and safety. The unit will be taught via two days of block teaching (online, face-to-face, via Zoom) and assessment tasks will focus on meeting key objectives required for confirmation of candidature. Attendance at the face-to-face Zoom classes is mandatory. XGR501 is a core unit of the Graduate Certificate in Research. It introduces a range of topics that will be developed further in the remaining units of the course. Please note you will not incur a tuition fee for this unit.

• Design and present a detailed research plan for an extended research project.
