Advanced Topics in Defence Paramedicine 2 unit (CAA213)

Introduction

This unit builds upon the underpinning knowledge developed in previous units and provides the advanced applied knowledge and clinical skills to identify, assess and manage acute emergencies. The epidemiological and pathophysiological aspects as well as contemporary management issues of the major body systems will be covered. Emphasis is on extensive physical patient assessment and out of hospital management of patients. You will further develop clinical reasoning and decision making skills, incorporation of advanced pharmacology and medication management and application of contemporary advanced paramedicine skills.

Learning Outcomes

• Formulate clinically sound patient management plans based on assessment findings, knowledge of pathophysiology and patient management standards for patients (including paediatrics) experiencing a range of medical and trauma conditions.
• Perform a broad range of advanced clinical and health assessment skills, demonstrating an understanding of the relevance and importance of comprehensive patient assessment to support patient management in the critical care setting.
• Apply a team based collaborative approach to the assessment and management of patients in an inter-professional health care environment.
• Apply a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to facilitate the assessment and management of patients accommodating diverse cultural, social and socioeconomic backgrounds.
