Introduction

CAA500 develops advanced clinical reasoning and decision-making for health professionals working across a range of practice settings. The unit examines clinical reasoning models, the development and use of illness scripts as organised knowledge about conditions, patient assessment, diagnostic reasoning, probability and uncertainty, and the influence of context on clinical decisions. Students apply these concepts to complex patient cases and consider how evidence, clinician expertise, patient preferences, collaboration and available resources inform safe and effective care. The unit also examines legal and ethical responsibilities and the opportunities and risks associated with clinical decision-support systems and artificial intelligence, including bias, reliability, transparency, privacy and professional accountability. Through case-based activities, reflection and discussion, students evaluate their own reasoning, recognise its limitations and develop strategies to improve the safety, quality, experience and outcomes of patient care.

  • Critically reflect on own practice against principles of evidence-based practice, considering implications for patient safety, quality of care, patient experience and clinical outcomes.
