Introduction

Profound and damaging changes occur in the brain as a result of the diseases and conditions that cause dementia. Understanding these changes is vital for providing appropriate person-centred care, developing new therapeutics and preventing disease. This unit delves into the biological basis of dementia, exploring four common diseases causing dementia (Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia and Lewy body dementia). You will learn the relationship between the development of pathology in the nervous system and the clinical features of these diseases. They will explore how the diseases that cause dementia progress, and will explore the current tools and techniques used in diagnosing dementia-related conditions. This unit will appeal to students in any health area with interest in dementia and brain biology.
