Neurobiology of Dementia 2 unit (CAD602)

Introduction

This unit engages students with the primary research literature in the neurobiology of dementia, including pathological and functional research, and a range of models and outcomes used to assess potential therapeutics. Genetics, lifestyle risk factors, biomarkers, imaging techniques and assays are examined to equip the student to effectively evaluate the primary research literature.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explore methods of differential diagnosis to identify the diseases causing dementia, and how this diagnosis may affect subsequent support and therapeutic approaches
  • Examine the detailed neuropathology of Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, fronto-temporal dementia and Parkinson’s disease, as well as less frequent causes of dementia, at cellular and systems levels
  • Examine the evidence base linking putative biomarker assays to brain pathology and disease progression for the major diseases of dementia listed in ILO2
  • Characterise in detail the ageing-related and genetic risk factors for the major diseases of dementia listed in ILO2
  • Examine the evidence used to identify nervous system regions and functions which are thought to support cognition
