Major Project in Dementia Studies unit (CAD700)

Introduction

In this unit, you will undertake a major research-informed project relevant to people living with dementia and potentially of direct relevance to your professional and/or personal context, under the guidance of a research-experienced mentor. The form and scope of the project will be negotiated between student you and your mentor.  For example it may be the construction of a policy, white paper, guideline, or evidence-based recommendation , and/or a scoping or systematic review, or design of a primary research project suitable for submission to a funding agency or protocol suitable for submission to an ethics committee. You will develop a project pitch and must engage in an online interactive discussion of your project idea with the Unit Coordinator. You will write a literature review establishing the evidence base for your project and its design and submit your major project as a substantial written report at the end of semester.

Learning Outcomes

• To employ advanced perspectives from care, support, neurobiology, public health and/or health policy to identify knowledge gaps or the potential for evidence-based improvements in the student’s personal context
• Use field-appropriate research methods to design an individual project related to dementia knowledge and/or practice, including an outcome evaluation.
• Evaluate the relevant primary literature in a chosen domain of dementia research
• Describe and specify an original research project in consultation with academic staff in a manner suitable for an ethical and/or strategic approval process.
• Communicate in an effective and scholarly manner.
