Medical Care on Offshore and Inland Waters unit (CAM635)

Medical Care on Offshore and Inland Waters includes on water field work utilising watercraft with students participating in real world water rescues and medical techniques. 

In addition to the usual tuition fees, this unit attracts a field work levy of $2,000 to cover running costs. 

During the on water field work experiences students will be required to:  

  • Employ principles of the Accident Management Plan framework. 
  • Demonstrate accident management planning for a single and multiple patient problem. 
  • Demonstrate approaches to rescue and repatriation planning. 
  • Demonstrate principles of teamwork in an emergency situation. 

Each of the units within the Healthcare in Remote and Extreme Environments course provides advanced, experiential learning that cannot be replicated in a classroom or simulated environment. The field components are essential to achieving the intended learning outcomes, as they expose students to realistic, high-stakes conditions that develop critical decision-making, teamwork, and applied clinical skills in extreme or remote environments. 

Introduction

Medical Care on Offshore and Inland Waters provides a both a theoretical and practical introduction to the planning and delivery of medical care in various aquatic settings: from scientific expeditions and Antarctic cruises on large ships through to white-water rafting and kayaking expeditions. The unit runs as an approximately 8-day residential, intensive course that covers non-clinical theoretical topics such as maritime regulations and maritime search and rescue, clinical topics such as marine envenomation, drowning and cold injury, and then combines these with practical scenarios and exercises in a swift water setting. The unit concludes with the completion of one online written assessment.
