Introduction

This unit provides you with the knowledge and skills to work with women, their newborn babies and their families during normal labour, the birthing experience and early parenting days. Underpinning this unit is a belief that childbirth is essentially a normal but pivotal life event. The unit will encourage you to develop a midwifery care approach that respects and supports women in the decisions they make around birth and care of their newborn. You will develop these skills using a woman-centred philosophical approach to provide care and guidance for a woman and her partner during labour, birthing and early parenting. Studies include legal, ethical, and cultural factors that impact midwifery practice. This unit is one of six units that make up the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery and contributes knowledge, skills and attributes required for competent beginning-level midwifery practice. By the completion of the course, you will be required to demonstrate the acquisition of the current NMBA Midwifery Standards for Practice.

Learning Outcomes

• Synthesise and apply midwifery theories to identify the need for, plan, provide, and evaluate culturally safe and inclusive, woman-centred midwifery care for women, their infants, and significant others during normal childbirth and the transition to parenting.
• Critically analyse and interpret the legal and ethical obligations of the midwife to the mother and her unborn/newborn baby, and apply these principles to inform their decisions during childbirth and the early parenting period.
• Critically evaluate and reflect on the professional roles of the midwife in promoting physiological childbirth, demonstrating reflexive practice to strengthen safe, ethical and woman-centred care.
