Foundations of Mental Health Nursing Practice 2 unit (CNA743)

Introduction

The emphasis is on the application of, through project work, key principles supporting the notions of rehabilitation and recovery across a range of mental health settings and mental health disorders. The roles and responsibilities of the client, their family, the mental health nurse, and other significant service provider stakeholders are addressed. Students will also keep a Clinical Portfolio as an ongoing record of their progress towards achieving the ACMHN Standards of Practice for Australian mental health nurses (2010).

Learning Outcomes

• Demonstrate your knowledge and skills of rehabilitation and/or recovery processes through the application of these processes in clinical practice.
• Demonstrate developed knowledge, skills and attitudinal competency against the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN) Standards of Practice (2010), utilising evidence of care skill completion, reflective practice and feedback from clinical facilitators and preceptors.
• Critically apply knowledge of contemporary mental health nursing practices to a range of real and/or hypothetical clinical scenarios across a range of mental health nursing care contexts.
• Develop a comprehensive Case Formulation for a client that is informed by theoretical and clinical knowledge (e.g., etiological theories for anxiety disorder; depression; eating disorder; or adaptive/maladaptive stress responses) and provides a guide for further management, therapy and treatment.
