Introduction

This unit builds upon the knowledge, understanding and skills developed in CNA772 Interpreting Patient Deterioration. The content of this unit focuses on the scientific theories related to nursing critically ill patients with single and multi-organ systems failure. Specialised cardiothoracic and neuromedical pathology will be explored as will principles of nursing the critically ill child and obstetric patient.

  • Discuss the applied pathophysiology of complex conditions.
  • Analyse the data gained from assessment, monitoring and laboratory findings against evidence-based literature to recommend options for interventions in critical care.
  • Justify therapeutic management related to the care of the complex critically ill patient incorporating problem solving capabilities and consideration for alternatives.
