Introduction
Public health emergencies can have both substantial and unequal effects on the health and wellbeing of populations and communities. This unit examines how public health principles and evidence inform the prevention, preparedness, management and evaluation of public health emergencies. Throughout this unit, you will explore the determinants, distribution and population health impacts of public health threats, with particular attention to populations experiencing increased risk or disadvantage. Using contemporary case studies, you will analyse public health surveillance, risk assessment, prevention and control measures, health communication, community engagement and strategies for protecting population health. You will also evaluate how public health authorities, public safety and government agencies, communities and other organisations work together, considering governance, legal and ethical responsibilities, health equity, public trust and opportunities to strengthen future public health preparedness.
