Introduction
In this unit, you will learn about the management of disease states commonly seen in clinical practice. Building on your foundational knowledge, you will integrate applied pharmacology, toxicology, pharmacy practice and pharmacotherapeutics to develop safe, effective, and evidence-based approaches to patient care. You will also engage in practical, research-informed activities designed to prepare you for a career as a lifelong learner, enabling you to interpret and apply research and guidelines to your clinical practice. This unit focuses on conditions related to the brain and nervous system, including infections, mental health and addiction.

Learning Outcomes
- Apply scientific literature, guidelines, reference texts and pre-skills knowledge to clinical and research scenarios.
- Apply the mechanism of action of the medication to the pharmacotherapeutic use, common side effects, and toxicity risks.
- Identify medication related problems and/or health issues that may actually or potentially impact the patient.
- Design person-centred therapeutic plans that incorporate appropriate monitoring strategies and non-pharmacological interventions to enhance health outcomes.
- Counsel patients on medications and devices in a clear, safe and comprehensive manner demonstrating person-centred care.
- Evaluate a patient’s presenting complaint and medication/medical history to provide suitable management.
- Dispense medications in clinical scenarios.
- Use and interpret outputs from screening, diagnostic tools and laboratory tests to optimise patient care.
- Communicate to a variety of stakeholders, including patients, peers and other health professionals.
- Act in a legal, ethical and professional manner.
