Anatomy and Physiology of the Head, Neck and Thorax unit (CXA112)

Location: Online

Introduction

In this unit, you will develop foundational knowledge of the embryological development, anatomy and physiology of systems involved in speech, voice, swallowing, respiration and hearing. You will examine the relationships between structures of the head, neck and thorax, neurological organisation, and physiological processes that support these functions.
You will relate anatomical structures and physiological processes to their contribution to typical and atypical function, and analyse the effects of developmental, anatomical and physiological disruption. Through structured examples and case scenarios, you will apply foundational bioscience knowledge to explain typical and atypical presentations associated with speech, voice, swallowing, respiration and hearing.

Note

Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.

Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain relationships between embryological development and the formation of systems supporting speech, voice, swallowing, hearing and respiration to identify functional implications of developmental disruption.
  • Describe the anatomical structures involved in speaking, voice, swallowing, respiration and hearing, and explain their contribution to typical and atypical function.
  • Explain the physiological processes involved in speaking, voice, swallowing, respiration and hearing and analyse their contribution to typical and atypical function.
  • Apply knowledge of anatomical structures and physiological processes to explain typical and atypical presentations of speech, voice, swallowing, respiration and hearing in case scenarios.
