Introduction
This unit prepares you to meet ESSA accreditation standards in Exercise Science for the delivery of exercise to clients who have cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions. You will learn to apply advanced knowledge of disease processes, comorbidities and medical treatments to evaluate risks, monitor for safety, and make evidence-informed decisions about exercise treatment plans. The unit emphasises application of professional judgment in assessment, in managing changing health status and collaboration with clients and other allied health professionals to support safe and effective exercise participation for people with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions.

Learning Outcomes
- Analyse the pathophysiological processes; diagnostic and prognostic indicators and common treatments for cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions to evaluate contraindications and termination criteria for exercise.
- Conduct assessments suitable for people with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions within the Accredited Exercise Scientist Scope of practice to inform exercise delivery and client management decisions
- Appraise the medical and pharmacological treatments of people with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions for risks to inform collaborative exercise treatment planning.
- Manage changes in health status during exercise for people with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions to make informed decisions about session modification, emergency action, and onward referral.
- Collaborate with clients and allied health professionals to contribute to shared decision-making in the delivery of exercise to people with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions.
