Introduction

This unit builds upon your foundational knowledge and skills introduced in previous units to examine cardiorespiratory physiotherapy. It, therefore, retains the focus on applying the biopsychosocial model of practice, person centred practice, evidence-based practice, reflective practice, critical thinking and interprofessional collaboration. You are required to synthesise new knowledge and skills related to responding to clients with clinical cardiorespiratory conditions and integrate them in the application of the clinical reasoning cycle and physiotherapy clinical decision-making model, culturally safe practice for diverse populations, determining the quality of information sources and professional interaction and communication.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the aetiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis and clinical presentation of common cardiorespiratory disorders.
  • Describe common medical and pharmaceutical interventions used for cardio-respiratory conditions and how these impact on cardiorespiratory problems amendable to physiotherapy.
  • Use structured clinical reasoning processes to devise, justify, implement, and evaluate client-centred physiotherapy assessment and treatment and communicate this to the healthcare team and the client.
  • Critically appraise your own practice and the evidence that supports and justifies safe and effective physiotherapy interventions to manage individuals with cardiorespiratory problems.
  • Estimate risk of cardiorespiratory complications, identify the signs and symptoms of a deteriorating client, and propose physiotherapy interventions to manage.
