Introduction

In this unit, Primary Health Care philosophy, principles and practices are introduced. Core primary health care principles of social justice, health equity and the influence of social determinants of health, empowerment, and health promotion are examined. The diversity of primary health care practice and range of ways nurses engage and work with individuals, groups and communities to improve and maintain health are analysed.  Practice relating to the identification of health needs and interventions, with attention to vulnerable populations, associated with health literacy, the development of health education programs and education resources are appraised.
