Information and Communication Technologies in Policing unit (PEM106)

Introduction

This unit covers the functionality and usage of various information and communication technologies (ICT) systems and infrastructure within policing and public safety frameworks, and systems such as IDM (Information Data Management), TRIM (Records Management), EDACS (Enhanced Digital Access Communications System) and others will be discussed in terms of their interconnection with public safety data management. The Unit also provides a basic introduction to how various ICT systems work within broader public safety frameworks, and covers issues around ethics, privacy, anonymity, computer crime, cyber safety, and social media. Focus is on the role of police and public safety organisations’ roles in prevention, regulation, and enforcement of cybersecurity issues.

  • Identify and match appropriate IT systems for use in front line policing functions in compliance with procedures and protocols.
  • Explain in broad terms how the different IT systems inform each other.
  • Explain the purpose and relevance of the different protocols for IT system use, and the link between IT reporting, governance and accountability.
  • Articulate issues of privacy, anonymity, cyber safety and crime in the context of modern ICT infrastructure.
