Reinforced Concrete Structures unit (ENG317)

2027 Unit information is now available. View 2027 unit information

Planned Year of Introduction:  2027

Introduction

This unit provides students with an understanding of reinforced concrete structures, focusing on material properties, structural behaviour, and design principles in compliance with Australian Standards (AS 3600). Students will learn how reinforced concrete elements respond to bending, shear, axial, and combined loading conditions, developing skills in designing and detailing beams, slabs, columns, and footings. Topics include structural safety, serviceability, and durability, ensuring students can analyse, design, and optimise reinforced concrete structures for real-world applications.

This unit integrates with Steel and Timber Structures, enabling students to compare structural materials and assess their suitability for different applications. Additionally, students will evaluate the embedded carbon and environmental impact of concrete, exploring strategies to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete construction through material selection, design efficiency, and lifecycle analysis.

Through progressive design projects, quizzes, and industry-standard software applications, students will develop structural analysis, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, preparing them for practical engineering challenges in modern construction.
