Hobart
Planned Year of Introduction: 2027
Introduction
This unit introduces students to the design and analysis of stormwater infrastructure, focusing on hydrological and hydraulic principles in civil engineering. Students will develop skills in rainfall-runoff analysis, peak flow estimation, hydraulic modelling, and stormwater system design, using Australian Rainfall and Runoff (ARR) guidelines to ensure compliance with industry standards. Topics include culvert design, urban drainage networks, retention basins, Water-Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) principles, and software-based modelling, with a focus on climate resilience and sustainable water management.
Building on Fluid Mechanics, where students learn fundamental hydraulic principles, this unit prepares students for employment in local government and water resources engineering. Through practical projects, students will learn how to design stormwater infrastructure that mitigates the impacts of climate change and urbanisation, ensuring sustainable and flood-resilient infrastructure.

Note
Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
Key Dates
| Study Period | Start date | Census date | WW date | End date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 2 | 05/07/2027 | 27/07/2027 | 30/08/2027 | 24/10/2027 |
* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (refer to How do I withdraw from a unit? for more information).
Unit census dates currently displaying for 2027 are indicative and subject to change. Finalised census dates for 2027 will be available from the 1st October 2026. Note census date cutoff is 11.59pm AEST (AEDT during October to March).
