Sustainable Power Systems unit (ENG326)

Introduction

This unit introduces students to the fundamentals of power system analysis, power generation principles, and transmission line design, with a focus on both conventional and renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro. Students will explore how these energy sources integrate into modern sustainable power networks, gaining skills in power system modeling, operation and stability of distribution and transmission networks, while considering climate safe approaches, efficiency, economics, and environmental impact. 

Through a combination of theoretical study, practical laboratory experiments, and project-based learning, students will analyse power flow in power systems, reactive power control and voltage management in meshed networks and will assess basic system stability. The unit also introduces aspects of grid reliability and technological advancements, preparing students to evaluate and design power systems that accommodate renewable energy generation and society's future energy needs.

By engaging with industry-standard tools and simulation techniques, students will develop a strong foundation in power system operation and sustainability, equipping them with the analytical and technical expertise necessary for advanced study and professional practice.
