Hobart
Planned Year of Introduction: 2027
Introduction
Advanced Dynamics and Vibrations is a third-year unit that deepens students’ understanding of advanced principles in dynamics and vibrations. This unit explores the dynamics of rigid bodies in three dimensions and also the vibration of systems. The dynamics part of the unit examines the kinematics and kinetics of rigid bodies in three dimensions, dynamic balancing of rotating equipment and gyroscopic motion. The vibrations part of the unit is directed at developing your understanding of the analysis and design of dynamic mechanical systems. This includes modal analysis of multi degrees of freedom systems, modal matrix, characterisation of modes by generalised mass, stiffness and damping, modes of vibration of distributed systems. Through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and hands-on computer programming and simulations, students will develop the skills needed to analyze and optimize mechanical systems for various industrial applications such as transportation, energy, robotics, and manufacturing. Advanced dynamics and vibration principles are applied to analyze the impact of climate change factors on mechanical and vibration systems. By the end of this unit, students will be well-equipped to solve real-world dynamic and vibration problems with a focus on sustainability, reliability, and energy efficiency.

Note
Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
Key Dates
| Study Period | Start date | Census date | WW date | End date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 22/02/2027 | 16/03/2027 | 19/04/2027 | 13/06/2027 |
* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (refer to How do I withdraw from a unit? for more information).
