Hobart
Planned Year of Introduction: 2027
Introduction
Mechanical Design is a third-year unit that builds on foundational knowledge of mechanical design processes and materials to develop students' abilities to perform advanced mechanical analysis and design.
The unit focuses on equipping students with the skills necessary to carry out detailed engineering design based on first principles, while integrating materials, manufacturing techniques, and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) modelling. Students will deepen their understanding of how to utilise engineering analysis to inform the design process and to develop CAD models that reflect real-world mechanical challenges. Key areas covered in the unit include the use of engineering materials, modern manufacturing methods, and tools for design verification. Students will be tasked with solving industry-relevant mechanical design problems, applying advanced design principles to create reliable and efficient solutions.
The importance of energy efficiency, manufacturability, and reliability in mechanical system design will be emphasised, preparing students for more complex design challenges aligning with industry expectations. The unit also introduces climate-safe engineering principles, encouraging students to incorporate sustainability and carbon reduction considerations into their designs. Through a combination of design tutorials, and a practical design project, students will gain advanced mechanical design skills, preparing them for fourth-year capstone projects and industry-ready roles

Note
Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
Key Dates
| Study Period | Start date | Census date | WW date | End date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 2 | 05/07/2027 | 27/07/2027 | 30/08/2027 | 24/10/2027 |
* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (refer to How do I withdraw from a unit? for more information).
Unit census dates currently displaying for 2027 are indicative and subject to change. Finalised census dates for 2027 will be available from the 1st October 2026. Note census date cutoff is 11.59pm AEST (AEDT during October to March).
Learning Outcomes
- Propose concept solutions that capture implicit and explicit performance requirements for a mechanical design brief.
- Evaluate a preferred design against a design brief and identified performance criteria using relevant engineering theory
- Present results using professional and industry standard methods of communication
- Manage a design project using systematic and professional processes within an authentic team environment
- Incorporate climate-safe engineering principles by designing mechanical systems with increased efficiency to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate impact
