Engineering Project Management and Economics unit (ENG408)

Introduction

This unit is for all engineering specialisations, and will be delivered by industry (70%) and academics (30%). It focuses on real projects, case studies, and examples from industry. Project management methods will be outlined, with examples of how modern engineering projects are scoped, proposed, tendered, and contracted for delivery. Skills will be developed to enable planning and management of design, logistics, supply, construction, assembly, commissioning and testing. Fundamentals of engineering project economics will be discussed, including the detailed information required to prepare project financial reports, cashflow models, budgets, and due diligence reports for investment decision.

Learning Outcomes

• Define and describe the key elements of a standard engineering project plan.
• Construct an engineering project plan that details the functions and processes to manage schedule, budget and resources.
• Explain concepts of project economics, such as net present value, discounted cashflow, and return on investment
• Develop project financial details, based on the breakdown structure, tasks and duration, with and without the use of software
• Communicate effectively in a written and oral form to achieve leadership and teamwork in a project team environment.
