Planned Year of Introduction: 2028
Introduction
This unit introduces students to selected advanced topics in structural analysis and environmental geotechnics. It will explore stress analysis through rigorous usage of Finite Element Analysis, advanced features of structural frame analysis software, and analytic methods, and will include a discussion of stress invariants and failure theories applicable to both structural and geotechnical engineering. Applications will include stress concentrations due to notches, fillets and holes, sources of shear and combined stresses including torsion with warping constraint, and structural vibration and buckling. Rigorous usage of analysis software will be emphasised through formal verification and validation methods. Topics related to environmental geotechnics include salinity in groundwater and soil, soil erosion, site investigation and monitoring techniques, seepage and groundwater control, contaminated land, landfills as well as tailings storage facilities.
Students will engage in advanced assignments using industry-standard software, applied research in geotechnical risk management, and simulation-based projects. The unit prepares students for professional practice in high-level structural and environmental geotechnics applications.
