Honours Project A unit (ENG424)

Introduction

This unit provides students with the tools to develop the initial stages of a major research and/or industry-relevant project, which will be continued in the following semester as Honours Project B. Students will learn how to prepare a well-motivated, feasible, and complete research plan with clearly defined goals and progress monitoring methods. They will conduct a relevant literature search and review specific to their topic, and develop and test effective methods to achieve the specified goals. Under the guidance of an academic supervisor, students are expected to complete a research plan, comprehensive literature review, and methods chapters. Professional reporting and accountability are emphasised through an assessed reflective diary documenting meetings with their supervisor and other stakeholders.

Learning Outcomes

• Plan an independent project requiring advanced knowledge and skills in an engineering discipline.
• Conduct a critical review of literature that meaningfully informs the motivation, novelty, methods, analysis and discussion of results for an engineering project.
• Develop and document methods to answer a research question and to defend a research approach in sufficient detail to be fully replicable.
• Communicate technical details of a project design and implementation in written and audiovisual formats.
• Manage a project carried out by a diverse engineering team comprising student, supervisor, laboratory, technical or industry support and any other relevant stakeholders in accordance with professional accountabilities.
