Introduction
This unit combines two very important topics for civil engineers: asset management and road transportation engineering. Asset management addresses the important emerging ¿eld of infrastructure, and in this unit the key principles of asset management will be taught alongside principles of transportation engineering by focusing on road assets. The course will cover the requirements as outlined in International Standard ISO55001 "Asset Management" and Austroads "Guide to Asset Management" and will align with the local government focussed "International Infrastructure Management Manual" (IIMM). The road transportation engineering component includes aspects of the following topics: transport modes and planning; economics of transport; traf¿c and highway engineering including vehicle characteristics, collection of traf¿c data, parametric and non-parametric tests applied to traf¿c engineering problems, headway distributions, gap and delay models, speed and ¿ow relationships, roadway capacity - uninterrupted and interrupted ¿ow, isolated traf¿c signals, coordinated traf¿c signals, traf¿c accidents; environmental problems associated with roads. The aim of this component of the unit is to allow students to develop an understanding of the role of the traf¿c engineer in traf¿c planning and operations, designing components of the traffic infrastructure.

- Identify bene¿ts, costs and alternative options relevant to evaluating a road as a transport delivery mechanism.
- Design and evaluate a road pavement transportation system using current design standards, traffic statistics, and traffic modelling probability concepts.
- Forecast changes to road infrastructure using road asset management and traffic engineering principles.
