Solid Mechanics unit (ENG449)

Planned Year of Introduction:  2028

Introduction

This unit provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental principles of Solid Mechanics, focusing on the behaviour of materials under various loading conditions, including tension, compression, torsion, and bending. In addition to theoretical concepts such as stress, strain, deformation, and failure criteria, the unit integrates the Finite Element Method (FEM) as a key computational tool for analysing complex structures. Students will gain practical experience with ANSYS software to model, simulate, and interpret real-world engineering problems, allowing them to assess mechanical behaviour, stresses, strains, and deformations in structural components. By the end of the unit, students will be able to apply both analytical and numerical methods to solve solid mechanics problems, perform failure and safety analyses, and use FEM and ANSYS in practical design and optimisation scenarios. Additionally, students will learn how to incorporate solid mechanics principles into their structural designs, ensuring that solutions are sustainable, resilient, and capable of addressing future climate challenges.
