Thermal Engineering unit (JEE223)

Introduction

Energy is one of the 21st century’s biggest engineering issues, and thermodynamics (the science of energy) will play a key role in understanding the energy needs. JEE223 Thermal Engineering is a foundation unit designed to introduce the laws and concepts of engineering thermodynamics using several contemporary applications. This unit will provide an understanding of the storage, transfer, and conversion of energy. Energy can be stored within a system in different forms, such as kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy. Energy can be transferred between a system and its surroundings by work, heat transfer, and the flow of hot or cold streams of matter. Energy can also be converted from one form to another. You will explore performance analysis of energy converting plants used in the maritime industry.

  • Apply Laws of Thermodynamics and Ideal Gas Law to non-flow and steady-flow processes.
  • Describe the heat engine cycles and assess their performances for operating duties.
  • Present quantitative data as part of a high-quality technical report.
  • Conduct energy analyses of the systems by calculating the rate of energy conversion and transfer for conduction, convection and radiation processes.
