Introduction
This unit develops your understanding of the railway as an integrated whole system with emphasis on disciplines that interface with railway control systems across all lifecycle phases. You will explore railway leadership, management, business economics, and strategic planning alongside the operational roles of drivers, signallers, train controllers, and planners to understand system integration requirements. Through analysis of engineering discipline interfaces - including track, civil, rolling stock, and traction power - and examination of human factors and ergonomics principles, you will gain comprehensive knowledge of how to effectively coordinate and integrate railway control systems within the broader railway environment, ensuring safe, efficient operations and optimal interaction between technical systems, human operators, organisational structures, and the environment and community.

Learning Outcomes
- Analyse the principles of railway business economics, strategic planning, operational roles, and engineering management
- Evaluate the integrated influence of business and management principles on railway control system design decisions, implementation strategies, and operational performance outcomes
- Apply project management and engineering management methodologies to coordinate railway control system activities across multiple engineering disciplines and lifecycle phases
- Analyse the technical and operational interfaces between railway control systems and other engineering disciplines to identify integration requirements, dependencies, and potential conflicts that must be managed for safe and efficient operations
- Design an integrated railway system solution that aligns technical control systems with organisational, human factor, environmental and community requirements to meet strategic objectives
