Capstone Design Project A unit (JEE667)

Introduction

You will work as part of an engineering team on a complex railway control systems challenge set by an industry partner. You will negotiate project scope with the industry host, elicit stakeholder requirements, and define the technical constraints and interfaces, taking into account the interfaces with adjacent engineering disciplines. You will develop and evaluate concept options against safety, regulatory, operational, lifecycle cost, environmental and community criteria. You will then produce a preliminary design and a plan for delivery, supported by scheduled technical and design reviews.

Through this work you will apply systems engineering methodology, safety-critical design principles, and regulatory compliance frameworks to the early phases of a railway project. The unit culminates in a justified project proposal and preliminary design. The detailed design, verification and validation, and the industry showcase are completed in Capstone Design Project B.

Teaching Pattern

Delivery mode
This unit is delivered online. It is project-based and team-delivered, supported by scheduled synchronous weekly supervision and design reviews rather than recorded lectures. It is offered part-time, one unit per study period, in Semester 1.

Volume of learning
The unit carries 12.5 credit points, equivalent to 150 hours of total student learning, consistent with UTAS workload requirements. The majority is supervised and independent project work, with the balance in review activities and assessment preparation.
