Introduction
This unit provides an introduction to the current and emerging technologies impacting on the management and operations of the maritime and logistics industries. More specifically, the unit uses the concept of Industry 4.0 to explain the disruptive nature of the current industrial revolution that is rapidly transforming the business environment and providing new opportunities, in addition to understanding how to navigate the application and adoption of the new technologies and processes.
Undertaking this unit will expose students to why and how the maritime and logistics industries are changing and will transform even further by, for example, artificial intelligence, smart everything, augmented reality, autonomous ships and underwater vehicles, and many more. Students will be required to reflect on the new Industry 4.0 technologies and systems and the capabilities they will require to prepare for entering the industry, and to consider how they may be impacted during their careers by the emerging Industry 5.0 approaches.

- Recommend strategies for industry 4.0 technologies’ adoption and integration by maritime and logistics managers.
- Analyse the disruptive impact, opportunities and challenges of current and emerging Industry 4.0 technologies and processes on the maritime and logistics industries.
- Evaluate the managerial implications from technological, regulatory, social, environmental, business and ethical perspectives of adopting Industry 4.0 and/or Industry 5.0 technologies.
