Research Methods unit (JNB608)

Introduction

Research Methods is designed to serve both theoretical and practical purposes. The unit begins by introducing the principles of project management followed by the philosophy, logic and nature of research and then each of the major research activities. 

Research Methods is an introduction to widely used methods of inquiry in the areas of social science, management and engineering that relate particularly to both organisational research and scientific enquiry. This Unit will build confidence in developing and refining research ideas that are presented through the development of a research proposal.  In summary, undertaking this Unit provides an opportunity to learn how to ask the right questions, adopt a scientific approach in ethically collecting data, and how to analyse and interpret data that is effectively communicated to assist in solving problems.

The major outcome of the Unit is a completed research project proposal suitable for students progressing to the Dissertation or Industry Research Project units.  For students not undertaking either of these units, Research Methods provides useful knowledge and skills in how to solve complex problems by providing a systematic approach and tools for conducting research.

Learning Outcomes

• Critique the implications of research concepts, principles, and activities on a research project in the context of the maritime, transport, logistics, and/or supply chain industries.
• Formulate and justify specific research questions to advance business practices in the maritime, transport, logistics, and/or supply chain industries
• Evaluate and design appropriate data collection and analysis approaches to fulfill the objectives of a research project, guided by a clear research philosophy.
• Develop a research proposal to initiate a research project for the maritime, transport, logistics, and/or supply chain industries.
