Strategic Management unit (JNB739)

Introduction

Discover how a truck driver reinvented the shipping industry! This unit introduces both the theory and practice of strategic management, with a focus on strategic thinking and decision-making within a networked industry.

Creative, conceptual application of strategic management theory is both expected and encouraged, with success measured by one’s ability to generate innovative approaches as a strategic manager. This requires more than adherence to models—it calls for thoughtful analysis, adaptability, creative insight  and originality.

To demonstrate how the strategic management process operates in real-world contexts, we will explore a series of case studies. These include the distinctive approaches ports use define and differentiate their strategic positioning, the resilience of a container line navigating turbulent competitive conditions and a comparison of two airlines—one that achieved strategic growth and another that failed due to ineffective strategic decisions.

It is equally important to reflect on your values as an employee—particularly how you prefer to be treated in the workplace. This self-awareness not only shapes ethical decision-making but also informs your understanding of strategic leadership and organisational culture.
