Introduction

On completion of this unit, the student will have the skills, knowledge and attributes to undertake shipboard navigational watch-keeping tasks on a commercial vessel as a trainee deck officer under the supervision of a Deck Officer. Particular emphasis is placed on the watchkeeping standards of the STCW Convention. This unit is delivered via classroom theory, tutorials, web-based learning and practical work in a simulated and actual shipboard environment.

• 1. Use nautical chart/publications and extract essential information for safe navigation.
• 2. Discuss the duties and responsibilities during watchkeeping at sea and in port and understand the basic collision prevention regulations
• 3. Identify and explain the basic operation of various types of bridge equipment and electronic navigational aids used to safely navigate a vessel and collision avoidance.
• 4. Explain the basic meteorological phenomenon at sea and identify the use of different meteorological instrument on board ships.
